Most people think that the window in the belly of most Pitts' is to see the
aerobatic box through. That's incorrect. You can't see the box through it and
if you look through that window during a contest flight, you'll bobble enough
to lose anyway. The real reason for the belly window is that if the engine
quits, your landing spot is in that window, just beyond the crotch strap.
A secondary reason is that if you see oil on the belly window or fire in it,
you won't be able to see your landing spot but you won't be needing it anyway.
Sort of a "use parachute" alarm.
