Rick,
I'm just finishing up my 10 hours of intro and we have never worn
a parachute either (in Canada). It was in a Aerobat 152. I've done
a few solo flights as well on it (acro) and feel very comfortable
not wearing a parachute. If however the law says wear parachutes
I'd follow the rule of the law. As a side note there seems to be many a
structural failure in planes while flying normal maneuvers.
I've watched a number of student skydivers jumping for the first
time and dispatched a fair number my self. Unless something has changed
in the past few years, all are on static line or are instructor
deployed. It's a scary thing because you realize that many of them
would probably not be able to deploy their own canopy or follow
through emergency procedures if it became necessary. This
despite quite a bit of training. Modern skydive gear is equipped
with automatic deployment devices to help get people through
the day whose minds have locked up on them for some reason.
I say all this because few pilots will ever use a parachute,
but beware that just because you have one on doesn't mean you
or your passenger will use it when the time comes.
