I usually require up to 10 hours just for a tailwheel checkout.
That's more than most instructors. A good chunk of that is aircraft
familiarity and acro (if an aerobatic aircraft). I am also a stickler
on getting wheel landings right...that alone takes a fair amount of
time.
The Pitts checkout is another 10 hours minimum (AFTER tailwheel and
usually after considerable tailwheel experience). That seems like a
lot, but that's because the Pitts is a whole lot of aircraft. This
includes a full spin series, emergency recoveries, and acro along
with lots of drill on takeoff and landings. However, it's worth every
bit of it. The Pitts is an absolute joy to fly.
