Mark,
First (air)port of call:-
www.bhpa.org.uk
You'll get a list of schools for your training. To fly on your own (well
maybe always with a companion) you require to have the Club Pilot (CP)
qualification which normally takes 8-10 FLYABLE days.
New kit in the UK:-
wing (DVH 1-2 for new pilots) £1450-£2400 ish
harness £300-£400 ish
helmet £99
reserve parachute £350 ish
Then like anything else in life you can start getting add-ons like vario
£200 upwards, radios £100 upwards, etc.
Secong hand kit, a few of my friends fully kitted from about £700 but watch
you aren't buying a performance wing (DHV2-3) as they tend to be really
cheap second-hand. Best talk with your school over kit anyway.
Enjoy :-)
Cheers,
John
