As mentioned by others, it doesn't change the flying performance at slow
speeds. If I would be to short on final I would definitely not recommend
to start to fumble with the drogue..

I have it on the back, in the middle, at the level of the bellybutton.
It also helps a little bit to get you in the upright position. I use no
swivel.

I tried a home made one but they are to sensitive to collapsing. The one
from Tecma (France) works fine.
I have it in my harness and can pull it like a parachute. I pull it long
before coming on final. It decreases the glide ratio at high speed
(factor 2 at 50 km/h) which makes it much easier to "aim" for your
landing spot (you have a bigger "angle" to work with). It also
stabilizes the wing if the conditions are turbulent.
Some people prefer to grab it and hold it in one hand on the bar. They
release at the last moment, just to stabilize the wing before landing?
Don't throw it over the bar!
