I learnt to fly in Austria :) and can reccomend a couple of schools in the
Ziller valley (Zillertal). They are local to Mayrhofen, about an hours drive
from Insbruck. I did try posting a reply to this post yesterday, however,
news servers being as notorious as they are it doesn't appear to have posted
:(

So here goes again. The Zillertaler Flugschule about 15 minutes walk outside
of Mayrhofen is where I learnt to PG. The Flying school is one of the
largest in the area and will cater for almost everything you want to do.
(Providing you can supply the reddies).

They all speak a reasonable level of English although a grip on the German
language would be of use, (its no normal German though, it's spoken with a
regional accent).

As for accomodation, although the school/club may not provide it, there is a
huge range of Hotels, and B&B's in the Village for you to choose from :).

I am sure I will get flamed (sorry, corrected) if I am wrong, but I am
pretty sure that the guy who runs the school Alfons, used to hold the world
record tandem PG distance record. Which according to the latest ratings is
now held by Jurgen Stock another local to Mayrhofen.

http://members.tirol.com/zfs/ is the link to the Zillertaler Flugschule
site, it is In german, but you can get contact information on the first page
:o). and there is an e-mail form under the info link.

The other alternative in Mayrhofen is Jurgen Stock's School... I dont know
much about the school, or how it is run however I do know a bit about the
man and have had the pleasure of watching him fly. As well as having the
affore mentioned distance record, he was one of a team who performed a stunt
which in my book commands serious respect!!!

I'm sure most people have herd of big brother, and their claims no one comes
in or gets out uninvited :) Well the German version of this TV program under
the same name, made this boast at the start of the series. So to cut a long
story short, Jurgen and a few friends launched, and flew XC to the site of
Big brother in Germany, spiraling down to land on the roof of the studios.
After a beating from the security and a big cover-up by the series
producers, the stunt was kept hush... but is known by those who need to and
those are nosey enough to find out (no comments as to which bracket I fall
into).

Anyway back to the topic Jurgen Stock has a flying school named Stocky Air,
a smaller school but from what I hear another good one, the only
dissadvantages to learning with Stocky is that they dont have their own
landing field so you may have to pay fees. I dont know about a URL for his
school either :/

Well I hope you can use this, or at least have a chuckle about big brother,
(what a shame the best we could come up with here was a remote controled
helecopter)!
