Of interest to hang gliders might be the new developments with the
Marske Monarch. This year we have developed the carbon Monarch now
weighing under 14- lbs. It features three axis controls and can easily
be launched with an autotow. You might want to check it out!

Winch towing ultralifhrs for many is a good option but how about a
re-look at the
requirements for a winch and autotowing. If the wing loading is low
enough the pull required is rather low. Consider the Marske Monarch...
it only requires 160 lbs pull to get aloft: that translates into a golf
cart or small vehicle (lawnmower?) going about 15 mph in a 8 mph
headwind!
Now some may say ... but thats a toy! But it is not and offers
delightful flying at all levels and can offer those with talent a tool
to develop tremendous skills.

Jim Marske has also written a good article found on our site on Towing.

This glider also offers the ability to use a payout winch where the line

never reaches the runway. After release the parachute comes out and the
line is retrieved while in the air. And to boot: a release form 1000 ft
is an easy altitide to get away from in a light winged glider such as
the Monarch... and infact you can get down to under 250 ft and still get

away!

This whole process is worth reconsidering in the light of rising costs
for soaring...... and the one thing I did not mention is the great
social fun one can have. While one pilot is towing the other is flying
and even an extended evening flight is enjoyable. Worth looking into!

For those interested we offer a Workshop on airfoils, structures,
fiberglass/carbon hands, flying the Monarch , etc from May 3-6th in
Marion OH. Here you will see the Monarch towed aloft by a payout winch
by an old golf cart.- the cost was zero!!!
