Hi Tony,
Sorry to cause you offence. If you had said on your original posting
that you were dyslexic then all would have been clear. Sometimes you
get people who post on this group and other groups who are merely
trying to take the mickey and I wondered if this was the case with
your posting. However, now that I know the situation I can view the
whole thing in a different light.
You did the right thing to go to Tony Webb to get your CP. He's tough
but fair and he does get results. I know Tony and Rhona well. I'm
surprised that you haven't contacted him about buying a glider, I'm
sure he would give you lots of advice and probably find a wing that
would suit you. I'm assuming that you are a BHPA member, if so why
don't you have a look at the classified ads in 'Skywings' or contact
your local hang gliding club and ask them if anyone has any glider
that would suit you. It would also be a good idea to get to know some
of the 'club coaches'. I don't know where you live but if you go to
www.bhpa.co.uk then you'll find a list of clubs in your area.
You didn't say how much you weighed. This would have a bearing on
which glider would be suitable. If you weigh up to say 13.5 stones
then probably an Airwave calypso or a clubman 160 would suit you. The
calypso would be a better bet though as the quality is much higher.
You will always find ads in Skywings for these gliders as people don't
tend to hold on to them for much longer than a year or so. If you are
heavier than this then I think you'll need to try to find a clubman
180 which are a bit harder to find.
If you were prepared to spend a bit more money then I'd recommend
buying a 'Pulse' which was also made by Airwave before they went out
of business. You will still see them advertised in 'Skywings' but they
are a bit more expensive. They also came in 3 different sizes and they
really are nice to fly.
In summary, Tony, I'm sorry to have caused offence but not knowing the
circumstances I assumed the worst. The last thing I would want to do
is put people off the sport, I did spend 3 years teaching hang gliding
so I do know a bit about encouraging people. I'm going to email you
personally with my telephone no. If you do need any advice then please
call me and I'll be pleased to help.
John.
