I have a King KLN90B which I have bitched about extensively in r.a.* before.
It doesn't "do" racetracks or procedure turns, per se. Instead, one must
switch the unit to OBS mode and twist the knob on the CDI as required to fly
the procedure. This is primitive compared to the snazzy GNS 430 I have used
in another airplane, but it actually simplifies things. Head-down, button
pushing time is much reduced and the best feature of GPS navigation, ground
tracking, is right there on the CDI for you.
In my opinion, GPS navigators are grossly "over-featured" and have a long
way to go in their user interface development. Their complexity can be a
real hazard to a single pilot doing an approach in IMC. As in your post
above, I have blown approaches because I got too busy trying to make the GPS
get with the program when something changed.
