Actually, there are several cures not the least of which is education
for the crew.
most of these modern machines have very sensitive airfoils. In the
case of the ATR, NASA expressed some surprise that the wing worked as
well as it did with the installation of boots disturbing the countours
of the wing. It makes the airplanes go very well, but they need to be
understood very well by the crews in order to get the most out of them
perforamnce and safety wise.It's for this reason that a very large
portion of ground school was allocated to icing avoidance, detection,
procedures, including a strict speed regime and proper use of deicing
equipment as well as recovery from ice induced upsets and stalls in
both the sim and in the aircraft itself.
The Roselawn crew would have (or at least should have) had the
advantage of all of this training..
