How about going around the Tehachapis to the west?
Mountains and MEAs are a lot lower over by the coast so you can go down to
Santa Barbara and then through LA area. It may be only a little further
actually depending on where in the Bay Area you're departing from.
Gorman Pass is higher than the coastal route but I think is intermediate.
There is an automated observer in the Gorman Pass - I don't know for sure but
SoCal FSS can probably give you a phone number for it. There may be similar
for Tehachapis or the airport could be a surrogate and pick some wind speed to
avoid - 20-25 kts?
