Current FAA policy is that the DPE is supposed to verify that any/all time
you put on the 8710 is valid and meets the requirements. One of the
important reasons this is done is because once your 8710 is accepted by the
FAA, if you were to lose your logbook, the flight time that was accepted on
your 8710 is considered your official, "valid" flight time. Recently, the
FAA caught a few airman applicants padding their F/W flight time on their
8710, while taking rotorcraft helicopter rating tests. Apparently the
applicants thought that the FAA Inspector or DPE wouldn't check the F/W
credentials because it was a helicopter test and the applicant had good
records of all the helicopter time. If the DPE is doing his or her job
correctly, he will check. Tailwinds, - antique examiner
