I've seen references to the high accident rate at night in a number of
safety articles over the years. I'll look for a specific reference
but most likely can be found in Flying's annual safety review.
It was notable that the high ratio applied to IFR as well as VFR. I
think there was some discussion about undershooting the final after
breakout and a lot of circle to land problems. I have heard that some
airlines don't allow circle to land at night for this reason.
