I found the "Holding pattern Computer" ($9 from Sporty's) a handy item, even
though the only time you'll actually get a hold is during instrument
training. It's a circular do-hickey that gives you the entry based on the
outbound heading and your course into the pattern.
I prefer Foggles instead of the hood. I prefer actual over both, but I
haven't seen "Actual IMC FedEx'd to you Practice Area" in the Sporty's
catalog yet. (Maybe I should check Hammer-Slammer.)
The Jepps for your region are a good investment. Much easier to read than
the NOS plates and there's more info on the actual plate. I got the NE
region for $17 and the yearly subscription is $78. AOPA will start putting
NOS plates on their web site after the first of the year, so maybe an AOPA
membership is worth considering.
I got the Gleim Inst Test CD for studying for the written and highly
recommend it over the ASA book.
Also, I got the IFR Kneeboard from somewhere (PilotMall I think). Clip the
plates and the low alt chart in with some paper and a pen in the pen holder
and launch.
