It's one of the best kept secrets in the avionics industry but one that you
should know about if you're considering the purchase of a Nav/Comm--new or
used. Europe has adopted 8.33 kHz Nav/Comm channel spacing. This has
tripled the number of aviation channels available in Europe--that's good
news. The bad news is that the FAA is bypassing 8.33 kHz spacing for the
U.S. and going directly to digital communications (NEXCOM) to relieve
spectrum congestion. Obviously, manufacturers of new Nav/Comm's don't want
the word to get out. Due to design limitations, it's unlikely that any
Nav/Comm purchased today, either 25 kHz or 8.33 kHz, will be able to be
modified to meet the NEXCOM format. According to the 1999 FAA Aviation
System Capital Investment Plan, NEXCOM is scheduled for limited
implementation by 2003 and full implementation by 2008
(http://www.faa.gov/nexcom/index.htm).
This presents a real dilemma for you if you're considering the purchase of a
new Nav/Comm. Simply put, the new Nav/Comm you purchase today for $3,000 to
$7,000 could become obsolete leaving you with a major investment that has
little or no trade-in value.
There is a "stop gap" solution. If you own a KX 170A/175/170B or KX 175B
Nav/Comm, give the MAC 1700 modification a second look. Although a KX 170
Series Nav/Comm modified with a MAC 1700 won't meet the NEXCOM requirements,
at least you can start enjoying all the features of a digital Nav/Comm now
for a fraction of the cost ($1,595.00 vs. $3,000-$7,000) until you know what
's going to happen with new requirements in the U.S. We can even modify
your 360-channel KX 170A or KX 175 to meet the new FCC Frequency Tolerance
Rule and convert it to 760-channels. It's the most cost effective way to
get a "new" Nav/Comm now while reducing the risk of investing thousands of
dollars in a new Nav/Comm that may become obsolete in just a few years.
The MAC 1700 mod for the KX 170 Series Nav/Comm will allow you to enjoy a
digital Nav/Comm now and save you thousands later. Just give us a call at
800-654-8124 or email sales@mccoyavionics.com.
