I called the sales number they list on the X-Plane web site to order the
product. A woman answered my call and left me with an extremely bleak
impression of the company. Not only did she seem irritated that I was calling,
but she got somewhat agitated when I probed into shipping options. The only
option is UPS, but she told me that they used to use regular mail and they lost
more product than got through. She gave no indication that any authority was
looking into this widespread corruption in the US postal service. I believe
that she was lying, but I don't understand why.
So here is what the charges she wanted me to incur would have looked like:
X-Plane $40 USD
UPS air 30 USD
both charged to my credit card at the time of sale. Here's what I would have
paid on arrival:
Brokerage $35.00 CDN (UPS Canada are unethical scum)
GST ~ 8.00 CDN
Another charge that UPS couldn't explain beyond
the acronym 6.50 CDN
Total = ~ $161.50 CDN
My original intent was to buy it from elsewhere so that I can make proper
shipping arrangements. Now though, I have decided to pass on X-Plane. It's
interesting that for a brief moment I considered a big box retailer selling
Microsoft product as the ethical guys. There has to be a third alternative.
