As a rule of thumb, for non-precision approaches you want to descend at
800-1000fpm for the reasons stated by all the others...
On an ILS my rule of thumb is 5 times your groundspeed, if you know it, will
pretty much hold a 3 degree glideslope...If not you should be able to
guestimate it based on your IAS and the known winds...Or just start around
500fpm with an IAS of 90kts and tweak from there...
